Clubfoot

Request More Information

Clubfoot is a common birth defect that occurs in infants; the incidence rate is one to two children per 1,000 live births. It turns the foot down and inward, and affects the tendons and ligaments not only in the foot, but in the calf muscle as well.

Our physicians use the Ponseti method of treatment, which happens in three phases:

  1. Casting – series of casts changed every one to two weeks to gently stretch and reposition the foot
  2. Tenotomy (heel cord) – Achilles tendon is clipped to lengthen the heel
  3. Bracing – designed to prevent clubfoot from reoccurring

Other orthopaedic conditions treated include:

Hand, arm and shoulder

  • Fingers: Syndactyly, macrodactyly, extra fingers, supernumary digits, webbed fingers, trigger finger
  • Hand problems: Radial club hand, congenital abnormalities, VATER syndrome, TAR syndrome (thrombocytopenia absent radius) and radial hypoplasia, amniotic band syndrome
  • Shoulder: Erb’s palsy (brachial plexus injury), Klumpke’s paralysis, birth-related shoulder trauma and dislocation

Muscular/neuromuscular disorders

  • Cerebral palsy: Related orthopaedic conditions
  • Spina bifida: Related orthopaedic conditions, tethered spinal cord
  • Nerve, muscular and connective tissue disorders
